While the war continues, so does the determination of the people on the ground who refuse to leave animals behind. Through PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, which supports critical animal rescue and relief efforts worldwide, and its partnership with Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), animals across Ukraine are receiving the care, protection, and second chances they desperately need. Bolstered by donations from kind donors like you to the Global Compassion Fund, the team can continue reaching animals who otherwise might have no chance of survival.
On August 31, 2026, during a rescue mission in Ukraine, a vehicle belonging to PETA’s partner organization, Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), was attacked by a Russian drone, badly injuring two animal rescuers. Rescued animals were also in the vehicle at the time of the attack, though thankfully, they were unharmed and have been moved to safety.
The team traveled through a war-torn area to bring the frightened animals to safety.
Drone Attack on Animal Rescue Team: Two Rescuers Injured
In the attack, a rescuer from ARK and another animal rescuer from the French organization Crisis France were injured. The rescuer from Crisis France suffered numerous shrapnel wounds and is hospitalized and required surgery, whilst the ARK volunteer suffered a wound to his eye, among other injuries. According to the latest information from ARK, his eyes are going to recover, and the wound on his arm has been sutured.
The Crisis France volunteer has recovered from surgery, and based on current information, neither of the animal rescuers is in life-threatening condition. The focus is now on their medical care and recovery.
The ARK team, together with other volunteers, organized the care and transport of the injured right away, further risking attack.
Rescued Animals Brought to Safety After Drone Attack
The rescued animals who were in the vehicle during the attack were taken to safety by another volunteer.
This lays bare the deadly risks animal rescuers in Ukraine face during their life-saving rescue missions. Despite the dangers, the teams continue to put their own lives on the line by entering affected areas, evacuating abandoned animals, and bringing them to safety.
PETA and Animal Rescue Kharkiv Continue to Rescue Animals in Ukraine
Since the start of the war, PETA Germany has been working with ARK and other partners to rescue as many animals as possible. The rescuers provide animals with food and medical care, evacuate them from dangerous areas, and bring them to safety.
This attack starkly illustrates that these rescue operations pose significant dangers not only for the animals but also for the brave people helping them.
