Ukraine withdraws from treaty prohibits use anti-personnel landmines
A formal decree signed by Zelensky confirms Ukraine’s intention to exit the Ottawa Convention, which aims to eliminate the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of such weapons. This move aligns with recommendations made by Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council and is described as essential to “protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”
The decision is not yet final; the exit must still be approved by Ukraine’s parliament before it takes full effect, according to reports.
One Ukrainian lawmaker emphasized the necessity of the move, writing, “Russia is not a side of this convention. We cannot stay bound when the enemy has no limitations.”
Ukraine initially joined the treaty in 1999 and completed the ratification process in 2005.
